Almere Solar Island Project
Liandon was commissioned to build the Almere Solar Island by Nuon and the municipality of Almere. The solar island provides the residents of the Noorderplassen West neighbourhood with renewable heating.
Covering an area of 15,000 m2 (over three football pitches), including about 7,000 m2 of solar collectors, the solar island is unique in the Netherlands and one of the biggest projects of its kind in the world.
Noorderplassen West consists of several ‘Islands’. The eastern side of the neighbourhood is themed on ‘Islands in Water’, the western side on ‘Islands in Greenery’. To blend in with the other islands, the solar collector field was also designed as an area island. The solar island is located along the access road, making it a striking landmark in the neighbourhood.
The solar collectors on the solar island use sun rays to heat water. This water is pumped directly into the district heating network, which supplies 2,700 homes with heating and warm tap water. The island will provide 10% of the neighbourhood’s heating requirements, which is sufficient for one million showers a year. Nuon supplies the remaining 90% of the required heating by means of district heating.
The project involves the large-scale application of renewable energy sources. The solar collectors and district heating system jointly reduce CO2 emissions by 50%.
Liandon was responsible for the engineering and project implementation. Construction started in March and was completed in June 2010.
