Liandon is responsible for realising the complete electrification of the A15 section of the Betuweroute: the second-largest infrastructure project ever to be carried out by the Dutch government. The Betuweroute is the first 25 kV railway line in the Netherlands.
The Betuweroute is a 158.5-kilometre double-tracked freight line running from the Maasvlakte at Rotterdam to the German border, several kilometres beyond Zevenaar. The line was officially taken into service in 2007. The Betuweroute is managed by Keyrail and used by various railway companies.
Liandon built the power supply stations for the A15 section on behalf of ProRail. The A15 section is electrified with 25,000 volt 50 Hz alternating current, which is a different voltage from other railway lines in the Netherlands (1,500 V direct current), in anticipation of European harmonisation. 56 stations were built for the electrification: 25 train protection stations.
Liandon was responsible for the entire engineering process: from design & build through to ‘ready-to-operate’. Physical Construction began in March 2004 and was completed in early 2006. Liandon has a maintenance contract for the Betuweroute Line until the end of 2010.
