cooling offices with cold water

Renewable Cooling Project in Amsterdam South East

Liandon is working for Nuon to install a cooling system in Amsterdam South East. Water that is naturally chilled during the winter is extracted from deep water reservoirs and lakes to provide cooling to offices in the summer.

The Ouderkerker Lake provides the water for renewable cooling. Cold water is pumped from the bottom of the Ouderkerker Lake and transported to the cooling station. Once there, the cold water is transferred via heat exchangers to the distribution network, to which the customers are linked. After use, the water is returned to the Lake.

Cooling requires the construction of a network with well-insulated pipes for transporting the water to and from the lake or water reservoir. The project comprises the construction of a cooling station, the automation of the complete installation, the construction of the pipe system in the Ouderkerker Lake and the connections of businesses to the cooling system via a main transport network.

Lake-sourced cooling is extremely environmentally-friendly and permits a CO2 reduction of up to 75% compared to conventional cooling systems, which are notorious energy guzzlers.

Liandon assisted Nuon with the project management for this cooling project. Important tasks involved setting up the project group as well as the license management, engineering and further project support. It was a major challenge to find a suitable pipe route that linked up with the existing and planned underground and aboveground infrastructure and was also easy to construct.

Construction started in August 2006 and was completed at the end of 2009.
